We are living in a 40 yr old condo which was cold and drafty. We were horrified to remove the drywall and insulation to find the fiber board siding, to which the vinyl siding was nailed, had many holes, some the size of saucers! Moisture had been getting is as evidenced by the black mold on the back of the insulation panels.
We used Duct tape and thumb tacks to cover the holes so the spray foam would not ooze out through the siding to the exterior, and then sprayed 1 inch of Foam it Green on 3 of our downstairs walls. After it dried, my husband trimmed away the excess and installed the 3 inch pink batting over the top. In some places he had to tear of some layers of batting to avoid compression of it. Then plastic went up and the drywall. It was 57 degrees out that day and my husband used a point-and-shoot thermometer to measure the temperature of the original walls. They were a full 10 degrees colder than the finished wall with Foam it Green! Now we are cozy and warm and no more moisture or wind can come through. We are confident our heating bills will be much lower this winter and the project will quickly pay for itself.
My husband bought the respirator mask from the company and created a plastic "tent" for each wall as he went along, duct taping the plastic to the ceiling and the down behind him to keep the product vapor off furniture, etc. It worked beautifully. After an hour, there was no smell or residue after my husband cleaned up his plastic.
His only complaint was toward the end of his project the mixture began to sputter as if the nozzle was beginning to get clogged. He thinks it might have been user error. The product went on properly but was just a bit lumpy toward the end. It was not a huge deal because after it dried, my husband just went back and sawed off any lumps or bumps before putting the pink fiberglass batting on top. He attributed the incident as something he probably did wrong. But even with that, we would do it again in a heartbeat! So for around $300 we had everything we needed delivered to our door and now have a nice warm little condo. Do not hesitate to get this product! Spend the $30 on the good respirator mask and make sure the kids and pets are out of the room for at least 1 hour. (we turned off the furnace and I put a bath towel at the bottom of my bedroom door for an hour)
Affordable DIY project about $300 for 3 walls in our condo
Amazing results. The insulated walls are a full 10 degrees warmer than they were before and no more moisture getting in!
