Spray foaming an attic is a very common project because it’s a quick and easy way to use much less energy. By sealing and insulating your attic properly, your home saves money and is more comfortable for you and your family.

Here’s how to do your attic with Foam it Green spray foam insulation.

Spray Foaming the Rafters in Your Attic

If you’re using the attic for living space, then you want to spray foam the underside of the roof.

If you have a shingle warranty you’re worried about, you can use baffles from your local home improvement superstore. They’re easy to install, very inexpensive, and sidestep that issue entirely. You install the baffles first and then spray Foam it Green against the baffles. This makes it so the spray foam doesn’t touch the roof at all. Another benefit of doing this that if you reroof you won’t need to re-foam because the baffles act as a drainage plane.

Finally, if you’re doing the roof, you’re sealing off the attic fully to make it unvented. You’ll want to reroute anything that needs to be vented outside, like a kitchen or bath exhaust fan that dumps into the attic.

If you do heat during the winter, you should use Foam it Green Closed Cell Anti-Microbial Foam. We recommend 3 inches thick. This will give you an r-21 and a seamless air barrier along with a moisture barrier. Adding fiberglass after the foam cures will raise your r-value even more. Plus the air barrier will allow the fiberglass to work well.

If you never heat during the winter, you can use Foam it Green Open Cell Anti-Microbial Foam. We recommend 3 inches thick. This will give you an r-12 and a seamless air barrier.

Spray Foaming the Floor of Your Attic

If you are not using the attic for living space or have an air handler that needs to breathe, then you want to spray foam the floor, leaving the vents open.

Spraying the floor minimizes the surface area you spray, minimizes the amount of foam you need, and minimizes your bills because you’re only heating and cooling the area you live in. In other words, you’re not paying to heat and cool the additional square footage in your attic that you don’t use.

If you have existing attic insulation, lift it and move it to the other side of the attic. Then you put down just 1-2 inches of Foam it Green. This creates a seamless air barrier that makes your other insulation work MUCH better. Plus the high r-value that Foam it Green gives you helps retain the energy inside your living space.

Once Foam it Green cures, replace the attic insulation over your new spray foam air barrier. Move to the other side and repeat, removing the existing insulation and spraying 1-2 inches of Foam it Green.

Another nice aspect of this is that you can leave the rest of your attic unchanged. Because it’s open, the fiberglass or cellulose has plenty of air to dry it out. Now, however, that air doesn’t get into your living space and doesn’t cost you hundreds or thousands of dollars a year in utility bills.
